

Prof. Rubens Nascimento Melo holds a B.Sc.in Electronic Engineering (1968), a M.Sc. (1971) and a Ph.D. (1976) Degrees in Computer Science from the Air Force Technological Institute in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the Computer Science Department of the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. In addition, he is the Academic Coordinator for the extension courses in the field of Programming and Systems Analysis, a position he has been occupying for more than twenty years. Recently, he has been nominated director of the Center of Distance Education under the Vice-Rectory for Academic Affairs of PUC-Rio.
Since 1966, he has been working intensively in Computer Science researching and implementing information systems relating to Programming Languages, Databases, Computer Graphics and Software Engineering. In particular he works on the Database area since 1974.
Until the present date, he has supervised more than 80 MSc theses and 5 Ph.D. dissertations. He has presented a number of scientific papers at several conferences and published some articles in scientific magazines. As a pioneer researcher in the Database and Computer Graphics areas in Brazil he founded both the Database Committee and the Computer Graphics and Image Processing Committee of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC). He was also the Chairman of the first Brazilian Symposium on Databases (I SBBD) and on Computer Graphics and Image Processing (I SIBGRAPI).
In his current academic research project, and in collaboration with his Ph.D. and M.Sc. students, he supervises the development of an Environment for Heterogeneous and Distributed Databases systems, based on an Object-Oriented Global Data Model (Project HEROS). Recently he also researches the development of an "Environment of Configurable Heterogeneous Object Oriented Database Mgmt Systems" (Project ECOHOOD).
In 1988, he wrote a book entitled "Non-Conventional Databases: The database technology and its new applications" and in 1997 a book on "Developing Client/Server Database Applications". Since 1969, and in addition to his current position at the Pontificia Universidade Catolica, his academic activities included acting as a regular Professor at the Air Force Technological Institute and at the Army Military Institute of Engineering in Brazil. He also was a Visiting Professor and researcher in institutions abroad such as the GMD (Germany 73), UCLA (University of California 81) and the University of Gainesville (Florida 83). His activities in these entities included active participation in projects as well as teaching graduate level courses.
He also has been a Consultant with important Brazilian enterprises in the database and graphical interface areas. In this capacity, his involvement included training as well as providing advice for the development of Executive Information Systems (EIS), Data Warehouses, Decision-Support Systems (DSS), Electronic Document Systems among others. In general, his advisory services includes the use of new technologies - such as Object-Orientation, Client-Server architecture, Distributed Databases, Electronic Documents & Image and Multimedia systems and Interoperability and Integration of heterogeneous systems.
