Dr. Carlos Lucena holds a degree in Economics and Mathematics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1965), a Master's degree from the Department of Computer Science & Applied Analysis at the University of Waterloo (1969) and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) (1974), and was a post-doctoral fellow at IBM Research (1975). Since 1982 he has been a Full Professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Waterloo (Canada) and associate researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute FIRST in Berlin. He is a member of the editorial board of several international journals: Communications of the ACM, the Journal of the Academia Brasileira de Ciências (Brazilian Academy of Sciences), the Journal of Formal Aspects of Computing and the Journal of Agent-Oriented Software Engineering (IJAOSE). He is experienced in Computer Science, with emphasis on Formal Methods, Software Engineering and Multi-Agent Systems and has published over 450 papers in the main vehicles of these

areas. Professor Lucena holds a CNPq productivity grant at Level 1A. During his career he has worked at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro as Vice-Dean of the University and Dean of the Technical and Scientific Center and has been several times the director of the Department of Informatics. Prof. Lucena has been awarded the Great-Cross Class insignia of the Order of Scientific Merit of the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil, the Carlos Chagas Filho Medal of Scientific Merit, Board of Directors and Superior Council of FAPERJ, the Álvaro Alberto Award of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Science and Technology and several IBM Innovation Awards, among many others. He is also a fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, of the TWAS (Academy of Sciences for the Developing World) and a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. By November 2012, he had advised 42 doctoral theses and 108 master's dissertations. In 2009 he received the ACM Distinguished Scientist Award and since 2010 Prof. Lucena has become the president of the National Institute of Web Sciences (INCT).
