The Department of Informatics

Teaching professional development can be understood as a permanent attitude of inquiry, of formulating questions and seeking solutions. It is the ability to maintain curiosity about your class.

The Information Technology Department (DI in Portuguese) has been performing with distinction in the Brazilian teaching and research scenery for more than 40 years. On this data base, a series of indicators that briefly outline the academic profile of this unit of PUC-Rio  can be found and  they show the constant search for quality keeping of our activities as a whole, and also of professors-researchers, students, technicians and office staff.

The DI involves various activities. In the teaching area, the extension, graduation and post-graduation stand out. In the research area, the Masters and Phd courses are prominent, as well as the research projects that can count on the infrastructure of the laboratories and library.

The DI has also worked intensely in the extension area, through courses and various initiatives that reflect the profile of its human resources.

History

Brief history of the Department of Informatics of PUC-Rio, by Arndt von Staa (2003)

1. Introduction It is difficult to narrate the history of an institution. It is even more difficult to do so when you have so much to say. what to count? How to structure the narrative? The periods in which we divided it were identified somewhat arbitrarily, but even so, they correspond to periods with their own characteristics that characterize them well. We believe that the set gives a good perspective on the history of the Department of Informatics (DI) at PUC-Rio and the role played by its members – professors, employees and students – to make it what it is today. 2. Genesis It all started when PUC, due to its excellent reputation, was chosen to host the first computer installed in Brazil. According to what the late Prof. Cardoso of the DCMM, who at the time was the president of the CNPq, a consortium was formed formed by the CNPq, IPqM (Navy) and Itamaraty, which joined forces to bring to PUC a Burroughs Datatron B-205 computer, the first computer to operate productively. in Brazil. It was a respectable machine,...[+]
