Prof. Hélio Lopes likes to develop research and apply advanced computing and mathematical techniques to solve real world problems that have scientific or industrial relevance. The breadth of his research has been crucial for his interaction with companies from different sectors, such as PETROBRAS, VALE, BANCO DO BRASIL, BRADESCO SEGUROS, BNDES and GLOBO.COM.

Biography

Dr. Hélio Lopes did his academic training at PUC-Rio. First, he graduated in Computer Engineering in 1990. Then, he completed his master's degree in Computer Graphics in 1992 and obtained his Doctorate in Mathematics in 1996. He has been a professor at PUC-Rio since 1996, when he initiated his career in the Department of Mathematics, and in 2012 he started a new journey in the Department of Informatics. It is worth mentioning that in the year 2001 he also worked in the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University (USA). He is fond of developing and applying advanced mathematics and computing techniques to solve problems that have industrial and scientific relevance. and his publications are focused on computer graphics and computer modeling. He is currently particularly interested in data science research in a cloud computing context and also in quantifying and visualizing uncertainties and their applications in the industry. Dr. Lopes has been been not only developing systems for the industry but also teaching specialized courses, and PETROBRAS, VALE, BANCO DO BRASIL, BNDES
and GLOBO.COM are examples of companies with which he has interacted. Professor Lopes has advised more than 40 graduate students and published books and papers at international conferences as well as in leading scientific journals such as Computers in Industry, Neurocomputing, Advances in Engineering Software, Engineering with Computers, Computer Physics Communications, Journal of Computational Physics, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, Computer Graphics Forum, Computers & Graphics, Computer-Aided Geometric Design, Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications, Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, among others. He is an associate editor of Nonlinear Theory and Its Applications at IEICE (The Institute for Electronics, Information and Computer Engineering). He is also a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC), and the Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics (SBMAC). He has been elected president of the Special Committee on Computer Graphics and Image Processing of SBC for the third time.
