Short Bio

Prof. Sérgio Colcher is the author of the most renowned national book in the area of Computer Networks. Currently, he is the undergraduate coordinator, coordinator of the Computer Engineering program and coordinator of the computer network graduate course. In 2012, Dr. Colcher received the Personality of the Year award from Assespro-RJ (Association of Brazilian Information Technology, Software and Internet Companies), in the category Outstanding in the Academic Sector. This award was created in 1997 to publicly recognize people that stood out for their contribution to computer science in the year it is granted.

Biography

Dr. Sérgio Colcher has been a professor at the Department of Informatics (DI) of PUC-Rio since 2001. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Computer Engineer (1991), Master of Science in Informatics (1993) and Doctor of Science in Informatics (1999), all from PUC-Rio, in addition to post-doctoral studies (2003) at ISIMA (Institute Supérieur D'Informatique et de Modelisation des Applications - Université Blaise Pascal, Clermont Ferrand, France). He worked at the IBM-Rio Scientific Center and in the hardware development division of COBRA (Computadores Brasileiros S/A). He was also a professor of MBA courses in Telecommunications Management and MBA in e-Business at Fundação Getúlio Vargas. He is the author of the book "Redes de Computadores: das LANs, MANs e WANs às Redes ATM" (Ed. Campus/Elsevier 1995), a book nominated for the Jabuti prize in 1996, and the
book "VoIP: Voz sobre IP" (Ed. Campus/Elsevier 2005). Prof. Colcher is also the general coordinator of the undergraduate courses of the DI at PUC-Rio, coordinator of the undergraduate program in Computer Engineering, academic coordinator of the graduate program in Computer Networks of PUC-Rio, and Coordinator of the Digital Media Institute (IMD) of PUC-Rio. In 2012, Professor Colcher received the Personality of the Year award from Assespro-RJ (Association of Brazilian Information Technology, Software and Internet Companies), in the category Outstanding Academic Sector, an award instituted in 1997 with the purpose of publicly recognizing people who, in the year of its award, have stood out for their contribution to the IT segment. His areas of interest include Computer Networks, Computer Systems Performance Analysis, Multimedia/Hypermedia Systems and Digital TV Systems.
